A Blind Date
By Judith Steger
As a confirmed spinster, it was with fairly little expectation that I went on to meet a man by the name of Piet Steger, on yet another blind date, which seems to be the only way a girl can try to meet a decent man these days! My friend Kate has known him since he was a little kid, described him as a Clark Kent look-alike in a white BMW, who always made an effort to dress really well. While it sounded promising, I kept reminding myself that blind dates always sound better than they are.
We met at a little coffee shop in Parkhurst. Conversation was a little stilted – I discovered later that he had been at a particularly drunken party the night before and was really hung over. He did look like Clark Kent though, so I went on another date with him. It didn’t take me long to realise what a fantastic man Piet is. He is exactly the kind of man every parent hopes their daughter will end up with.
It took very little time for us to realise that we were meant to be together and Piet proposed to me in a little boat on a lake at San Lameer on the South Coast of KZN. Thereafter, the frantic wedding planning began. Initially we wanted to marry on a wine farm, but these plans fell through and in hindsight that was such a blessing. We ultimately married on a public holiday, Monday in March 2010 at Oakfield Farm. The beautiful gardens, the striking Conservatory and the airy Summerhouse were the perfect backdrop for what was a very special, emotional and heartfelt day for us. We really could not have had a better start to our life together!
