A Tent in the Bush
By Karin Breytenbach
Jaco and I officially met in January 2005 while registering for the year at UJ. He had noticed me the previous year and just knew he wanted to meet me, even though we didn’t know each other at all. He was studying Geology and Geography and I was studying Chemistry and Biochemistry. I was 20 and he 21. When he saw me at registration he decided even though he didn’t know me, he was going to take a chance and just came up to me and introduced himself. I immediately liked him. That was more than 5 years ago and our relationship just grew from that day.
On the 25th October 2008, Jaco took me away on a surprise weekend in the bush to Sabrisa Lodge in Ellisras. It was so romantic and we were the only couple at the lodge where we got 5 star treatment. At sunset, he said we should go for a walk before dinner. While we were walking I saw a white tent in the distance and knew then that something was up.
Champagne was already on ice with roses and snacks, and after pouring the champagne, Jaco went down on one knee and proposed to me. I was so excited and happy and immediately said yes, he was the man I wanted to marry. That was definitely one of the most romantic weekends of my life.
We decided to get married on the 1st May 2010 which gave us enough time to plan the wedding. We decided on Oakfield Farm, due to the beauty of the wedding venue and professionalism of everyone there – we immediately felt at home. Our wedding day arrived, and even though it was a bit cloudy and rainy, everything was perfect and it was definitely one of the most special days for Jaco and I.
